Speaker: Allan Skidmore
Allan Skidmore’s successful career as a businessman and philanthropist started in a small way after receiving a business degree from Langara College in 1967. He then worked with his father, Art Skidmore, at Central Auto and Window Glass which was renamed Trans Canada Glass Limited and became a publicly traded company(TCG) in 1969. This company had various divisions, and Allan became Vice Chairman and President of the Automotive Group, while his brother Tom became the Vice Chairman of Finance and Investments of the Communications Group.
Allan and Tom established Speedy Celtel, the first distributor and service provider of mobile communications in Canada. In 1988 the brothers sold Speedy Celtel to Ted Rogers of Cantel and then purchased Glenayre Electronics in 1989, subsequently selling certain assets of Glenayre’s cellular division to Cantel. In 1992 the brothers created Glentel, the retail arm of Glenayre, and for the next two decades Allan helped grow the automotive group of TCG while Tom focused on growing the communications group.
In 2005, Allan undertook the first of three large divestitures. He sold Speedy Glass Canada and Apple Autostock to Belron; in 2015 he sold his remaining stake in Glentel to Bell, and; in May 2017 Allan sold the remaining assets of Speedy Glass USA and Novus Glass International to Fix Auto Group. He is now the Chairman of the Skidmore Group, and is actively growing and acquiring companies in this family company.
Over the last few decades, the Allan Skidmore Family Foundation has actively given back to the community, contributing to healthcare, education, and faith-based initiatives. One notable donation is the three million dollars towards the Alex Skidmore Renal Dialysis Unit part of a new nephrology unit at the new BC Children’s Hospital. Allan and Tom also invested in Skidmore Hall, the newest student dormitory at Trinity Western University. Most recently Allan contributed two million dollars toward a new Emergency Department at Langley Memorial Hospital.
In summary, Allan has over 40 years of leadership experience which contributes invaluable insight and direction to the Skidmore Group. Through his business success he has also been able to show leadership in giving back to the community.
