Our TWU Alumni Association and Office are busy celebrating the success of the Robert Borden Scholarship Gala and silent auction that took place earlier this month at the Telus Building in Ottawa. This event — sponsored in part by a TWU Alumni Association Grant — raised more than $13,000, allowing the organizing body to reach their original goal, set just over a year ago, of a $30,000 endowment.
Robert Borden Scholarship board member and gala organizer Mary Esplen explains, “This gala served as a wonderful opportunity to gather the LLC alumni and Ottawa community together. We had roughly 80 people in attendance and were privileged to have the Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Minister of Employment and Social Development and Minister for Democratic Reform and Dr. Andrew Bennett, Canada’s Ambassador for Religious Freedom in attendance. Dr. Janet Buckingham has also been instrumental in encouraging and supporting us as we embarked on navigating this process. We hope that this gala marks the start of an annual event that will continue to augment the Robert Borden Scholarship.”
The Robert Borden Scholarship, the first award of its kind, founded in February 2014, is funded and administered entirely by Laurentian Leadership Centre alumni in partnership with the University and other supportive constituents. Named for one of Canada’s most distinguished political leaders, this merit-based award is intended to assist a promising LLC student each semester in preparing for his or her career through the centre’s one-of-a-kind program. The award also provides a unique opportunity for donors to engage directly with recipients through the LLC’s continually expanding network of students and alumni.
Board member and annual donor Ted Lewis reflects, “All of us could point to a moment or an experience related to the LLC that helped us to establish ourselves in this city (Ottawa) and in our careers. As alumni who have been impacted so directly from a program such as this, we want to make sure that others have the opportunity to participate and take advantage of these same experiences that exist for students from a variety of disciplines at the LLC. That has ultimately been the vision behind this program. The growth is exciting and we look forward to continuing to offer our support in whatever way we can.”
The Alumni Association applauds the efforts of recently graduated alumni to donate their time, talent, and limited resources to fulfill their vision of feeding into the next generation of TWU students. Says LLC alumni and Robert Borden Scholarship board member Colin Weeres, “The LLC provides a unique opportunity to learn and work at the intersection of academia and public policy. I support the Robert Borden Scholarship because it makes this experience, which has been so impactful in my own life, more accessible to other students who may be considering the program.”
